Columbia Hall is a seven-story, 280,000 sq. ft. building originally built in 1952 as St. Michael’s Hospital. Following the School of Medicine’s move to a new facility, UND began re-purposing various portions of Columbia Hall as part of its Phase I Master Plan.
The renovation brought together several College of Arts and Sciences departments, including the Dean’s Office, Communication, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Psychology, and the Honors Program. Specialized spaces such as the Digital Communication Lab, Northern Prairie Community Clinic, and Psychology and Counseling Research Labs were also created.
As part of the re-purposing project, an underutilized library area was transformed into a flexible, tech-enabled space supporting over 2,000 students in the Communication curriculum, known as the Digital Communication Lab (DigiComm Lab). The lab features movable furniture and whiteboards to accommodate various teaching styles. It includes four digital learning environments (42 students each), breakout spaces, and can be reconfigured into a single 200+ seat active classroom. A nearby lab houses VR stations and teleprompters for media training and immersive learning.
